The 100-MW Bethel Power Plant was proposed as a collaboration between the Calista, an Alaska Native Corporation, and the gold-mining company NovaGold Resources Inc. The plant was to have powered the proposed Donlin Creek Gold Mine, as well as Bethel and several surrounding villages. However, the estimated electricity costs from this plant were too high. In 2005 NovaGold scrapped the project, and is currently considering a 320-mile long natural gas pipeline for the mine.
