Pacific Coal

Though Alaska's Arctic may seem far from everywhere, it's closer to Asian coal markets in China, Japan, and Korea than Australia or the Powder River Basin (PRB) in the US. Indonesia is currently the largest exporter of coal to China, presumably because of its proximity, but its reserves are far smaller than those in the US. The PRB is aggressively seeking to expand its export capabilities by building a new port in Washington or Oregon. Currently Alaska lacks the infrastructure to be a serious competitor in this market, but a proposed mine-mouth port at Chuitna on Cook Inlet could change that. Further in the future, a deepwater port in the Arctic could open access to a coal deposit about four times larger than the PRB.
