— Katmai's grandma is an able, if skeptcial, wilderness adventurer. Niki has been in these mountains before, in 2000, and remembers a particularly demoralizing bushwhack that went well into dark and left us camped crowded by brush. When we told her we wanted to do a trip with her this year, she focused immediately on how much bushwhacking there would be. We found a route that only involved a half day each way... the initial climb and the final descent. This left days high above the brush on tundra, rock, and ice.
