— This forested branch of Tutka Valley was on average quite low-angle. But hidden beneath the smooth trees were small but impassable cliffs between stretches of flat. We wound through, from shadowed forest to sunlit meadow. Moose tracks dented the moss, and bear droppings laced with plant fiber and berry seeds decorated faint trails. Amongst thousands of luntz (sitka-white hybrid) spruce we found a handfull of young mountain hemlock sprouting next to wet meadows. The forest was a detailed mystery.
