Ice face

Pits seared out by the blinding sun show where sediment is more concentrated in the ice, providing dark material to absorb the sun.
— We passed this face twice, a week apart, and even in that time, in the cold fall, we could see changes. Comparing the present to an image from 4 years ago on Google Earth, this ice face was barely emerging from alder forest then. Read more about our Life on Ice expedition.
