Dark sky over open water

During the winter, you can tell where there's open water even if it's over the horizon because the sky is darker. In this view from a cliff you can see the effect - dark sky over the water, bright sky over the snowy ice.
— This is a direct illustration of the concept of albedo - the amount of light something reflects back. It's very relevant in the case of sea ice. Ice reflects sunlight back into space, whereas water absorbs a lot of light.
