— Why are there so many icebergs in the lake?
Grewingk Glacier has been retreating, and recently an unstable portion on the north side retreated very quickly. Satellite images from Sept. 30 of 2018 show this area of unstable ice mostly intact, but when we visited last week it was gone. That unstable portion was actually floating on the lake. This means a lot of icebergs moving out into the lake. In the background of this photo you can see a particularly enormous iceberg - one that didn't calve off in the sense of ice falling into the water - instead it was simply a section of the whole thickness of the glacier that broke off and floated away.
